The Mission District
Not so long ago, this residential and industrial area of known as the Mission, was a lower middle class neighborhood with a latin identity and cheap rents. However, changes in the city caused a crop of Internet startups to spring up around the Potrero Hill side of the Mission, and with them a flock of chic restaurants and bars and condo developments.
Some say the inner Mission District has undergone far more hipsterfication than gentrification — the inevitable result of a surfeit of moderate rents, thrift stores, dive bars, coffeehouses, bookstores, art galleries and avant-garde theater.
Not so long ago, Valencia Street was a funky mix of Latino-owned car-repair shops, seedy dives and women-owned stores and bars. Though a number of these businesses still thrive, this area has become quickly gentrified.
Just a couple of blocks away, and parallel to Valencia, is Dolores Street. Hilly, quiet and beautiful, it’s shaded by palm trees and lined by grand old Victorians. Dolores Park remains a favorite for those who wish to retreat from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Mission.
